This is the second in a series of posts exploring Brownell Travel ‘s five core values of Passion, Integrity, Graciousness, Innovation and Excellence. Read about PASSION here and stay tuned for more from Brownell President & CEO Troy Haas.
If you google “Company Values,” concepts like Excellence, Integrity, and Innovation seem to make most organizations’ short lists, Brownell included. However, Brownell’s value of Graciousness is one I have yet to see repeated.
Graciousness is a tricky word that often gets confused with friendliness, politeness, and Southern hospitality, but that only scratches the surface of what is means to our Brownell team. To us, Graciousness is staying calm when things go sideways and extending merit when merit is not due. It means we give our partners time to own and solve the problems instead of getting hot with them. Graciousness makes us more effective for our clients and our team. How? Read on.
First, this particular value has been instrumental in creating an internal culture that people yearn to be a part of and has attracted top talent to our growing company. Just recently the Birmingham Business Journal named Brownell one of Birmingham’s Best Place to Work for the third consecutive year, and we were the inaugural winner of Birmingham’s Best Place to Work for Young Professionals.
Secondly, Graciousness creates trust and speed. A foundation of trust allows us to engage more wholeheartedly and sincerely with our colleagues, clients, and travel partners. In our business, disruption is the norm. Everything from seaweed to tsunamis take our well-made plans and toss them out the window. Managing disruptions without passing blame or pointing fingers is important. When we work through issues in partnership, we can quickly create better outcomes for our clients. We then are the company that suppliers want to work with again. That trust and level of respect has a marked impact on the ground experience for our clients, who benefit from that trust and respect in many ways.
Treating people well is not just the right thing to do, it is good business. In a world that is often harsh and jarring, Graciousness and trust are a key Brownell currency for the enriching and personal experiences our clients desire from our partners all around the world.
